The Fellow Ode Brew Grinder is one of my favorite grinders for pour over, drip coffee, AeroPress, French press and more. If you're upgrading from pre-ground coffee or a blade grinder, it's one of the biggest improvements you can make to your cup at home. Here's why I like it, where it falls short, and who it's for.
Why your grinder matters
The clean cup of coffee you get with this grinder will confirm how important it is to have a high quality grinder. An even grind means every particle of coffee extracts at the same rate. Uneven grounds mix tiny particles that over-extract (bitter) with big chunks that under-extract (sour). A good grinder gives you a sweeter, clearer, more balanced cup, even with the same beans and brewer.

Grind size guide
- French press / cold brew: coarse
- Chemex: medium-coarse
- Pour over (V60, Kalita): medium to medium-fine
- Drip machine: medium
- AeroPress: medium-fine
Use these as a starting point, then adjust by taste: if your coffee tastes sour or weak, go finer; if it tastes bitter or harsh, go coarser.
Tips
- Weigh your beans before grinding so every cup is consistent.
- Grind right before you brew. Ground coffee loses aroma within minutes.
- Brush out the burrs regularly to keep the grind clean and even.
